Rafael Calixto Escalona Martínez (Patillal, Cesar, May 27, 1926 - Bogota, May 13, 2009) aka "Master Rafael Escalona", was a Colombian composer, considered one of the greatest composers of the vallenato music. Escalona was Ambassador of Colombia to Panama under President Alfonso López Michelsen. Along with Lopez and Consuelo Araújo was co-founder of the Vallenato Legend Festival
Gradually he collected stories that would be the basis of his famous vallenato; the first was made in February 1943, when he was only 15; followed more than 100 compositions, tunes where you can not only rebuild their lives, but also the old Magdalena department, consisting of the current departments of Magdalena, Cesar and Guajira; support that has been given to the vallenato music to make it identity card of a region and a country. Escalona has received many honors, awards and been diplomatic, but perhaps the biggest was the recognition that Gabriel Garcia Marquez made him when he said "One Hundred Years of Solitude was no more than a 350-page vallenato".
